It’s always an exciting time when a new car makes its debut onto the market. More so than ever, the debut of the 2015 Nissan Murano at the New York International Auto Show is particularly exciting.
With the 2015 Murano, Nissan has managed to create a “statement” car—a true showpiece. This third generation crossover SUV has a wow factor that is sure to turn heads and grab the attention of modern drivers. In order to understand why, you have to understand the inspiration behind the aesthetic design of the 2015 Murano.
When the original Murano rolled out, Nissan designers sought inspiration from handcrafted Italian Murano glassware, believe it or not. Later, Nissan introduced the concept car “Resonance” as a jumping off point for a new Murano design. Now for the 2015 model year, Nissan designers are drawing inspiration from the future, specifically “the new age of future flight.” As Nissan explains,
“Advances in aerodynamics and lightweight materials are opening the door to commercial space flight,” added [Nissan Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Shiro] Nakamura. “With Resonance and Murano, we wanted to explore a new travel experience here on the ground, but with the same futuristic sense of lightness and air. This inspiration can be seen in features like their sleek boomerang lights, large daylight openings and especially in the bold ‘floating’ roofline.”
Not only has the future of Murano come to fruition, the Murano is the first vehicle that personifies the future design direction of the Nissan brand. According to Nissan,
“The 2015 Murano is the first production vehicle with Nissan’s bold new design direction, as expressed in three recent concepts – Resonance, Friend-ME and the Sport Sedan Concept that debuted at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. These concepts’ strong “V-Motion” front-end styling, boomerang-shaped lighting, floating roof treatments, thin and sculpted pillars, energetic and emotional flow on the bodysides, and low and wide stances represent a strong Nissan styling signature to be seen on U.S. and worldwide streets soon. Whether SUV, smaller car or sport sedan, this design language is a hallmark of Nissan’s future.”
While all of this sounds amazingly exciting, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. After all, the 2015 Murano is just the beginning—we’re sure there will be many more models to come featuring this new design of the Nissan brand. But for now, let’s look a little more closely at the features of the 2015 Nissan Murano.
Exterior features of the 2015 Nissan Murano
Every detail that went into the exterior design of the new Murano was intentional. From utilizing computer sketches and clay models, to pulling successful premium features from the previous Murano and the concept vehicles, the exterior design of the 2015 Murano is boldly crafted. “Energetic,” “aero,” and “sculptural” are just a few words that describe the Murano. The jet-like D pillars, “wind-swept” curved metal body, stretched and slimmed boomerang headlight and taillight designs, and available moonroof that features a 30% increase in size and opening lending to an even more open and airy feeling, show the new Murano is indeed emphasizing the inspiration of flight. Other exterior elements of note:
- surfaced rear bumper which directs airflow away from the vehicle
- “V-motion” front end with bold grille
- lower grille shutter that opens and closes for enhanced aerodynamic efficiency
- rear tire air deflectors for improved aerodynamics
- large rear doors for easy entrance and exit
- integrated roof-mounted rear spoiler
- rear privacy glass
- wide-opening rear liftgate with available power feature
- standard LED Daytime Running Lights
- side rearview mirrors with integrated LED turn signals
- available front LED headlights
- available Power Panoramic Moonroof
- available 20-inch machine-finished aluminum-alloy wheels
The 2015 Murano also has a V6 3.5 liter Xtronic transmission that lends to the vehicles’s 20% more efficient fuel economy. The new Murano underwent rigorous wind tunnel testing. Results showed the Murano having the best Cd (coefficient of drag) of any crossover: 0.31—the same as many sports cars, and extremely close to the Nissan 370Z. This is a 16% improvement over the previous Murano!
Interior features of the 2015 Nissan Murano
To round out the futuristic exterior design, the interior design of the Murano is equally artistic and sophisticated. Featuring a wealth of amenities normally associated with luxury vehicles, the all-new Murano offers the best in premium interior materials and exciting technology that help modern drivers experience comfort, convenience, and security on the road.
Murano designers were determined while crafting the interior space to create a “social lounge” atmosphere for Murano drivers. To that end, the 2015 Murano features a low, wide instrument panel and a large center information monitor. An improvement for the 2015 model year is the reduction of audio and navigation switches by more than half, replacing complexity with simplicity. Also, the center console has been lowered to encourage conversation between front and rear occupants.
NASA-inspired Zero Gravity front and rear outboard seats (as seen in the Nissan Altima and Rogue front seats), improved cargo capacity, increased rear seat legroom, fold-flat rear seat with available power return, and the fact that all rear seating/cargo configurations can be done from the back, with no walking to each door showcase the focus on comfort and versatility in the new Murano.
The 2015 Murano offers a wealth of signature Nissan technologies such as Nissan’s customizable Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display, which features a 7.0-inch high-resolution color display. An available 8.0-inch center color display offers multi-touch control of the NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Mobile Apps (subscriptions required).
- Additional available interior features include:
- heated and cooled front seats
- heated rear seats
- heated steering wheel
- advanced Bose® design with nine speakers plus dual subwoofers
- HD Radio®
- customizable advanced lighting system
The 2015 Nissan Murano also features the whole suite of Safety Shield technology to create a “shield” around the vehicle to avoid collisions.
Nissan assures drivers that the Murano offers available safety and security systems such as Moving Object Detection (MOD), Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW) and Forward Emergency Braking. The new Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) system utilizes radar to detect a moving vehicle behind the Murano approaching from either side of the parking space.
