The All-New 2015 Acura TLX vs. The Competition

Acura TLX vs Competition

If you’ve been following our blog for a little while, you know that we’ve been talking about the new Acura TLX for a while now. A new car may be impressive when it stands alone, but there’s something to be said, a lot to be said in fact, for how it compares to other models in its segment. To that end, we want to use today’s post to compare the 2015 Acura TLX 9-spd AT to the 2014 Infiniti Q50 Base and the 2014 BMW 3 Series Sedan 328i. We’re going to give you some of the most important highlights, but of course you can check out the full comparison in-depth on the Acura website.

Pricing and Warranty

When it comes to pricing and warranty specs, there a few “biggies” worth pointing out:

  • The Acura TLX has both a lower base MSRP and destination charge than the other two models.
  • Even when all three models are comparably equipped, the TLX is still the better price point.
  • All three models have the same basic warranty, but the TLX has a better powertrain warranty for both months and miles than the Infiniti or BMW models.

Comfort and Convenience

Here are the features these models have in common when it comes to comfort and convenience (except where noted):

  • Standard automatic climate control
  • Standard remote door unlock
  • Standard power windows and door locks
  • Steering-wheel-mounted cruise control
  • Tilting and telescopic steering column
  • Front adjustable seats
  • Power driver and passenger seats
  • Standard fold-down rear seatback (except for Infiniti)
  • Remote keyless access
  • Remote trunk release
  • Multi-function remotes
  • Push start ignition

Here is where the TLX has some advantages in making the vehicle more comfortable and/or convenient compared to the competition:

  • The TLX offers more driver-side memory adjustments than the BMW.
  • The TLX comes with a standard moonroof.
  • Unlike the Infiniti, the TLX has a standard universal garage door opener.
  • TLX_MultiViewRCamUnlike the BMW, the TLX has a standard rearview camera.
  • Unlike the Infiniti, the TLX offers dual adjustable seat height.
  • The TLX has standard heated front seats, which are not available in the Infiniti and just optional with the BMW.
  • The TLX offers standard access to satellite radio which is an option in the BMW. Also, surround sound, not available in the Infiniti and optional in the BMW, is standard for the TLX.
  • TLX_HeadlightsThe TLX trumps the BMW for standard LED headlights and the Infiniti for standard perimeter/exterior lighting activated via remote.
  • While all three models have storage features such as cargo area tiedown, seatback storage, and beverage holders, the TLX also has armrest storage.

Performance and Engineering

When it comes to performance and engineering, the mechanics of a vehicle can sometimes be a little more technical than customers care to know about. So again, here are some highlights.

All three models offer:

  • Automatic transmission
  • Front power ventilated disc and rear power disc brakes
  • Front and rear stabilizer bars
  • Power steering
  • Alloy wheels

The models vary in terms of liter size, front vs. rear wheel drive, valve configuration, direct injection vs. sequential electronic fuel injected, and turning diameter. However, the TLX has a few advantages:

  • The TLX is outfitted with a 6-cylinder engine compared to the 4-cylinder BMW. [find photo of TLX engine]
  • The TLX has both more horsepower and torque than the BMW.
  • Paddle shifters are standard on the TLX, but are optional on the BMW and not available for the Infiniti.
  • The TLX has standard hill start assist, which is not available for the Infiniti.
  • The TLX has bigger wheels than both competitors’ models (18 inches vs. 17 inches).

Safety is an area where car manufacturers don’t like to mess around, so it should be no surprise that these three models feature very similar safety features such as:

  • TLX_PerfBrakingAnti-lock brakes
  • Vehicle stability control
  • Traction control
  • Brake assistance
  • Placement and number of airbags
  • Active head restraints
  • Daytime running lights
  • Tire pressure monitor
  • Child-proof rear door locks
  • Vehicle theft deterrent system

The difference in this area is that the TLX and BMW also have a radio theft deterrent system, which is not available in the Infiniti.

Dimensions and Capacities

Finally, let’s get an overview of the size of these models. These models vary greatly in terms of the size of their wheelbase, height, curb weight, and maximum passenger volume. The only thing they seem to have in common in this department is that all three models offer seating for five.

Here’s where the TLX differs:

  • tlx exteriorThe TLX has both a greater length and width than both competitors’ models.
  • Both the front and rear tracks are bigger on the TLX.
  • While the ground clearance for the Infiniti is not listed, the TLX has a better ground clearance than the BMW.
  • In terms of maximum and total cargo volume, the TLX trumps the BMW.
  • The TLX has more fuel tank capacity than the BMW.
  • The TLX offers more front legroom and rear shoulder room than the BMW, and more front shoulder room than both the Infiniti and the BMW.

Why You Should Consider the Acura Advantage Program

2015 Acura TLX

The Acura world is abuzz with excitement! Already in production for a slated August release is the 2015 Acura TLX, Acura’s new performance luxury sedan. Just because this vehicle hasn’t hit the showroom floor yet doesn’t mean Acura lovers should be sitting idly by. On the contrary, we think this is the perfect time to consider the Acura Advantage Program.

Acura is confident drivers will love the new TLX! According to Acura,

“The all-new 2015 TLX delivers on its advertising tagline of “It’s that kind of thrill” combining incredible sports-sedan athleticism with premium luxury-sedan refinement. The new TLX is a technological powerhouse, featuring two advanced new powertrains and two next-generation Acura precision-handling technologies – Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS) and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) – all delivered in a sophisticated and dynamic new exterior package.”

To that end, Acura has made it beneficial for Acura and would-be Acura lovers to get in on the ground floor with the Acura Advantage Program. The Acura Advantage Program is a pre-sale program offering introductory lease and/or finance offers from Acura Financial services.

The terms of the pre-sale program require that customers order a 2015 TLX by September 2, 2014, and take delivery by October 31, 2014, in order to qualify for the following TLX Acura Advantage benefits:

  • TLX customers have the opportunity to take advantage of introductory lease and finance offers from Acura Financial Services, including a monthly lease payment of $299 for the 2.4-liter model and $349 for the 3.5-liter model for 36 months with a $2,499 down payment – or APR financing of 1.9% for 24-36 months or 2.9% for 37-60 months.
  • New clients and existing owners of a 2004 or newer Acura vehicle who commit with a Buyer’s Order from July 7, 2014 to September 2, 2014, and take delivery by October 31, 2014, are eligible for a $500 Personalization Allowance for Acura Genuine Accessories (at MSRP), with which they are able to choose from a list of 2015 TLX Accessories or a special Acura Accessory Value Package associated with the program.
  • Current Acura lessees may be eligible for a lease extension from Acura Financial Services of up to three months to allow for the arrival of an advance-purchased TLX.

You can get even more details about the program on the Tischer Acura website, and of course we encourage you to do so.

Because the 2015 TLX is still in production, there are few live photographs of this model. However, for those considering the TLX, there’s an awesome online e-brochure to peruse. There’s also a TLX-dedicated site on the Acura website that showcases interactive displays about some of the innovative all-new TLX features, such as the electric gear selector, On Demand Multi-Use Display™, and even some of the new TLX accessories.

We think the 2015 Acura TLX will truly be a luxury sedan that will both set a standard in its segment and make Acura drivers and enthusiasts determined to own this car. To that end, we encourage you to consider the Acura Advantage program to not only put you in the Acura of your dreams, but to help you to do so affordably.
