Sedan Comparison: The Nissan Altima vs. the Honda Accord

nissan altima comparison

The Nissan Altima is the top-selling Nissan model and certainly is our top-selling car here at Tischer Auto. But do a Google search comparing any two sedan-sized models, and you’ll see the Nissan Altima and Honda Accord are stiff competitors. Both offer a variety of features that modern drivers both want and appreciate. For these two models, it comes down to the nitty gritty—the little details—in order to determine which one is right for you. So let’s look a little closer at the 2014 Nissan Altima 2.5 S and the 2014 Honda Accord LX (CVT)—some of the more base trims that tend to be more affordable—and see what our comparison reveals about these two competitors.

The Similarities

If you look at this comparison chart from the Nissan USA website, you can see that the Altima and Accord have many similarities such as:

  • 4-door/5-seat capacity
  • Power remote driver and passenger mirrors
  • Halogen headlights
  • Fully automatic exterior light control
  • Delay-off headlamps
  • Power door locks
  • Remote keyless entry (keyfob for all doors)
  • Power windows
  • Steering wheel-mounted cruise control
  • Manual tilting and telescoping steering wheel
  • AM/FM stereo with CD
  • MP3 decoder
  • Steering wheel audio controls
  • 1st row LCD monitor
  • Wireless phone connectivity capability
  • Variable intermittent windshield wiper blades
  • Rear defroster
  • Window tint
  • Driver information center
  • 4-cylinder engine/DOHC valvetrain
  • Front-wheel drive
  • CVT transmission
  • Passenger front/driver and passenger side-impact/curtain 1st and 2nd row airbags
  • ABS
  • Brake assist
  • Traction control system
  • Vehicle dynamic control
  • Vehicle security system
  • Child safety rear door locks
  • 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty
  • 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty

Now you know why we said these vehicles regularly go head-to-head. Despite their similarities, there are some notable differences when it comes to the Altima and the Accord.

The Differences

For example, while both cars have air conditioning (of course!), the Accord has automatic AC as well as standard dual zone front air conditioning—a feature not available in this Altima trim. The Accord also boasts adjustable (as opposed to fixed) rear head restraints, external digital memory controls, speed sensitive volume, (slightly) better horsepower and torque, and is a little roomier (except in terms of front legroom and front headroom, in which the Altima is more spacious). Are these details about the Accord unimportant? Not at all. Features that impact comfort and convenience are certainly influential factors when it comes to choosing the right car. However, we think there are some important features of the Nissan Altima that are highly influential, also.

Here are a few ways in which the Altima stands out when compared to the Accord:

  1. Lower MSRP
  2. Better highway and combined MPG
  3. Body material is both galvanized steel and aluminum resulting in a lighter car which helps with fuel economy
  4. Intelligent Key doors and ignition (not available on this Accord)
  5. Standard cargo tie-downs (not available on this Accord)
  6. Illuminated and locking glove box
  7. Rear reading light
  8. Power driver’s seats vs. the Accord’s manual driver’s seat
  9. 60-40 split folding rears seats (must fold down entire rear seat in the Accord)
  10. 6 speakers vs. 4 speakers in the Accord
  11. Tire-specific low tire pressure warning
  12. 2.5 liter (Accord—2.4), 18 gallon (Accord—17 gallon) engine
  13. Lighter curb weight
  14. Smaller turning radius

That’s no small list of ways in which the Altima offers drivers its own means of comfort and convenience!

Praise for the Altima

Of course, at Tischer, we’re biased. So you might be scratching your head, thinking you might need to take our opinion with a grain of salt. If that’s the case, check out some of the accolades the Nissan Altima has received from within the auto industry:
